Planning a Journey Management System

Some key factors to consider in managing journey management risk:

  • Road Conditions
    • Road Construction
      • Are shoulders present?
      • Are roads likely to have off-camber curvatures?
      • Is the road open to the public or is it a private lease hold access?
    • Is the road surface paved, gravel or dirt?
    • How may lanes?
    • How often is the road maintained?
  • Journey Length
    • Will part of this journey be at night or when conditions are more hazardous (fog, mist, etc.)?
    • Is this journey's timing and route conducive to rest stops?
    • Is the scheduled arrival time practical using safe driving practices?
  • Terrain
    • Are there hazards associated with mountainous or boggy terrain?
    • Will break-up or freeze-up conditions affect terrain?
  • Weather
    • How sensitive is this route to weather changes like snow, fog, or heavy rain?
    • Is this route subject in parts to flooding or icing?
  • Density
    • Is traffic density expected to be heavy or light?
    • What mixture of traffic will likely be encountered?
    • What pedestrian traffic will be encountered?
    • Will this route go through school zones where children are present?
    • Is wildlife, particularly at dusk and dawn, likely to be present?
  • Environmental Factors
    • Does the route run through national parks?
    • Are there sensitive streams or rivers along the route or crossing the route?
  • Visibility
    • How much will visibility be affected by sunset or sunrise conditions?
    • How do intersecting routes join or traverse the planned route?
    • How to railway lines traverse the planned route? Are railroad crossings controlled?
  • Communication
    • Is the route within cellular coverage?
    • Is the route within satellite coverage?
    • Do drivers have appropriate cellular and satellite communications equipment (e.g. Find Me SPOT or satellite phones)?
  • Emergency Facilities
    • Is the route regularly patrolled by local police, RCMP or state police?
    • Are drivers aware of emergency support facilities along the route (if available)?
    • Are other company units and personnel likely to be in the area?
    • Are competitor rigs or crews in the area, and can they be contacted?
